DMOZ Listing
DMOZ (Open Directory Project) is the Internet’s largest directory system (indexing over 4 million web sites) and is maintained by human editors. Having your website listed in DMOZ can also be an important part of having a web site rank well in Google, because Google itself uses DMOZ results in it’s own directory.
With over 50 search engines using the DMOZ directory, a link here will give you a higher importance in terms of your link as opposed to a regular directory. DMOZ is probably the nearest thing the internet has to an impartial searchable directory. It’s not a search engine, which means that results are arranged in static categories the user looks through to find the subcategory they require, but it is important for search engine ranking algorithms and search engine rankings.
Some benefits of being listed in DMOZ are:
- One of the oldest and respected directories.
- Increased website visibility.
- DMOZ feeds over 50 other search engines including Google.
- Only the best websites are included making you an authority.
- Manually human edited by impartial editors.
DMOZ is run by a side company of the Netscape corporation, but not for any direct commercial gain, and they have very few paid staff. The majority of the directory editing and the decision of which sites get a listing is done by unpaid volunteers or editors.
